Our Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

On the surface, this album might appear more like a challenging academic challenge than a new popular music album by an artist who just had a last single featured an international pop star. Divided into 4 distinct movements and performed in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical transformation, often via the perspective of various women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone renders the efforts of contemporary artists seem rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in avoid dry academic posturing is almost a miracle, and full credit belonging to Rosalía. While this is not the first time project to fuse historical sounds and modern styles, its scale are far higher here, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. What really raises her fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist during her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its whirlwind. When she is breaking hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This playful spirit shines clearly during a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops away, and there's a spontaneous laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in like comedic force. The track then shifts into the wild single featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The charm of Lux is that you rarely exactly know—or even wish to know—what it is going to next."

Nearly each song concludes in a totally distinct point from how it began. One moment explores the transient nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier rhythmic work starts out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften the song's rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Accessibility

A key balancing act on the album is navigating the gap between radical innovation and broad appeal. It is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song sung entirely in English builds around a chorus that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spins upward. That feat is repeated on a different powerful ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried treasure that takes time to fully mine but never seem like a chore. Where other major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux offers a lavish feast where the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
